Inspirational People Management

‘He that is good with a hammer tends to think everything is a nail’
Abraham Maslow

Imagine a workplace where

  • Management is respected and followed, rather than feared and resented

  • No-one wants to leave, and everyone wants to join

  • There is no power, only responsibility

  • Everyone is encouraged to focus on their strengths, and what they can bring, rather than on their weaknesses and what they can’t

  • Winning is a habit, and failure isn’t contemplated

  • Everyone is supported to achieve their objectives in their own style

  • People are treated as individuals not robots

The truth is that people leave managers rather than organisations. As an employee your manager is the most important and influential person in your working life, and can literally make or break you. Good ones contribute greatly to their organisations.
This is the main reason why big corporations spend so much time and resources in making sure their managers are competent and professional. It's considered natural for companies to make routine checks on how managers handle their team, broadband UK company O2 for instance performs bi-monthly manager appraisals just to ensure that their people are well taken care of.

My Approach

Has always been based on the philosophy that an employee who is engaged, feels valued and understood, and gets recognised for the contributions that they make, will be likely to give far more in return than one who is managed badly and autocratically.

I believe that great managers demonstrate a compelling combination of leadership and support. The pursuit of power is not for them, only the success and wellbeing of their teams, and the reward and recognition that this brings. I have worked with and for a number of great managers, and they have had commonalities. They give trust easily, they communicate with honesty and integrity, they focus on strengths, they inspire those around them, they support their teams to succeed, they put the team above any individual, and they deal with issues quickly and equitably.

Success comes easily and consistently to managers who demonstrate these behaviours. They attract and retain the best people. Their teams will walk over hot coals for them, because of the loyalty that they inspire. Can you recall a time when you worked for a manager like this?

I am passionate about people management, because I have also worked with and for some poor managers too, and have seen the damage that they can do both to their teams, and their organisations.
My unique approach is based on many years of experience, is very teachable, but most importantly, it works. And it works well.
