The Coach Approach

"My greatest strength as a consultant is to be ignorant and ask a few questions"
Peter Drucker.

Imagine a workplace where

  • There is a clearly defined vision that everyone understands and buys into

  • All employees are focussed and engaged in working towards that vision

  • The whole workforce feels that they have a contribution to make, they feel valued and feel part of the team

  • Everyone feels inspired the moment they walk through the door

  • There is a winning culture of trust, openness and honesty

  • Employees are empowered to drive their own development to gain the skills that they need to work optimally

  • Successes are celebrated appropriately and regularly, and everyone is recognised for their contributions
The top positions within the Sunday Times top 100 companies are routinely filled with companies such as this. They are not only the best places to work, as voted by their employees, but they are also very successful. The share performances of the top 100 companies outperform the FTSE 100 by a factor of around 2:1.

My Approach

Has always been to focus on the individual rather than the task. If you get to the heart of the task, you improve the outcome of the task. If you get to the heart of the individual, you improve the outcomes of the individual, in all ways. I have worked for many years for Healthcare companies, and as such have had much exposure to the world of medicine. Some doctors when confronted with a patient experiencing a symptom will treat that symptom. However, the best medicine is practised by doctors who have the ability to identify and treat the cause of that symptom, no matter how seemingly unconnected the two can appear.

Experience has proven to me that this approach can be applied not just to individuals, but also individual teams, and individual organisations with outcomes that are dramatically improved whether hard or soft measures are used.

People do what they do more effectively when they do it because they want to rather than because they have to. Enthusiasm and passion, rather than skills and knowledge are more commonly the key differentiators between outstanding and average performers. My coaching style has proved time and time again to inspire both individuals and teams to embrace whatever it is they are doing, and to enjoy it by giving of their best.
